Celebrated on the first day of the new year, the summer solstice, the Dawnfire Festival is a celebration of light and growth in Umbria. Reaping the benefits now of both early and late harvested plants, the country is at its highest in terms of abundance.
As the days are at their longest, entire cities shut down to bask in the sunlight (or whatever weather may be present) to host festivals in the streets with various games, feasts, and other revelry. As the sun fades and night approaches, torches are lit to continue the light even into the darkness of night. Magical displays of light and pyrotechnics are demonstrated across the skies (Hrafnsberg in particular is known for its show).
It is one of many Holidays and Festivals celebrated throughout the country.
